Apartment hunting in New York is especially brutal in June for the same reason every bar suddenly has a long line outside: the yearly flood of new graduates. More than one million bright-eyed 22-year-olds just picked up their college diplomas and are officially on the job hunt. If you’re one of them, we don’t doubt that your resume is spotless and you’ve nailed your elevator pitch. But what are you going to wear?

College prepares you for a lot of things, but, after four years of yoga pants and Stan Smiths, dressing for interviews is not likely one of them. Even fashion types struggle to strike the right balance between professional and chic. You don’t want your neon mules to get all the attention, but you also don’t want to blend in with the crowd. So we scoured the market and found five perfect outfits for every profession, from finance to fashion. For women entering the world of banking, a few special tips: Skip the basic gray blazer and button-down and try a sculptural jacket and high-neck blouse instead. Admittedly, there’s more sartorial wiggle room in certain fields, but even aspiring gallerists and PR execs should err on the polished side with covered-up (not flashy!) separates, plus a few sensible yet striking accessories. Above, five foolproof interview looks worth shopping now.
