A £225million superyacht owned by a Russian oligarch moored up alongside warship HMS Belfast in the shadow of the iconic Tower Bridge, last week.
The floating palace, which dominated views from the central London landmark, belongs to Andrey Melnichenko and his glamorous wife Aleksandra, reported to boast a £8.5billion fortune.
Andrey Melnichenko is up there with the world’s richest men – ranked 139th in the Forbes World’s billionaires list 2016.
The industrialist owned his fortune in fertiliser, coal, power and banking.
He and his family live a glamorous jet-setting lifestyle hanging out with celebrity pals.
In 2005 Melnichenko married Aleksandra in a lavish ceremony – more on this below.
Aleksandra began modelling in Serbia at the age of 15 and worked for fashion houses in Paris, Milan and London. At 17 she joined girl band Models, who had a hit with Money Money.
The daughter of an architect and artist, she speaks English, Spanish, Italian, Serbian and Russian.
Travelling in style – multi-million pound super boats and customised private jets
Jaws hit the floor as Tower Bridge was raised to allow Melnichenko’s £225million superyacht, imaginatively named Motor Yacht A, cruise up the Thames into the heart of London.
Reportedly one of the most expensive superyachts ever to sail into the capital it moored up alongside the historic warship and major London tourist attraction HMS Belfast.
The comparison was stark, highlighting the lavishness of Melnichenko’s hi-tech yacht, built for him by Philippe Starck.
Among its more extravagant features are a bomb proof owner’s cabin, a rotating bed and three swimming pools – one with a glass base.
It has seven luxurious cabins for up to 14 guests and accommodation for 42 crew members.
The 119metre superyacht – one of the 25 largest in the world – is reportedly up for sale and expected to reach about £300million.
But investors better make sure they’ve got some cash left over as it reportedly costs a staggering £300,000 to refuel.
So, why would anyone want to part with this king of the seas? Well, Melnichenko has reportedly purchased a new boat.
Super Yacht A – see the theme – is one of the world’s largest sailing yacht and is rumoured to have set him back £450million.
It’s not just on the sea that Melnichenko likes to make an impression he has a customised Boeing 737 private jet, with a prominent A at the front of the plane.
