If you didn’t already know, ‘Diseases of Civilisation’ is a thing

When the manner in which we live goes against nature’s intended ways, we bring upon ourselves lifestyle diseases or diseases of civilization. Diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, stroke and obesity are, unfortunately, some of the familiar ones. And given the magnitude of (negative) changes in our lifestyle that are simply a result of living in 2017, it’s only a matter of time before we find ourselves or someone close to us suffer from one or more of these. If and when that happens, what do we do? How do we treat the condition and restore normalcy?

There are three approaches to treat any lifestyle disease 1) medicines only, 2) lifestyle changes only or 3) combination of medicines and lifestyle changes. Which one is right for you? Let’s discuss each approach and find out.

Approach 1 – Medicines only

This is the most convenient of the lot. All you have to do is to pop a few pills. But from an effectiveness standpoint, this is the worst approach.

Taking pills or potions without making changes is like adding more fuel to the fire while trying to keep it contained – it’s only a matter of time before you get too excited with the fuel and the fire gets out of control. Your current lifestyle is what brought you here. Continuing to live the same way just means your condition is worsening everyday and your dosage will need to increase to keep you safe. Needless to say that taking pills on a daily basis in the long term has side effects which are far worse than the disease you’re trying to treat.

Approach 2 – Lifestyle changes only

This is the hardest of the lot. You will need to remove pretty much everything that you consider fun and will need to be consistent too. Obviously, this will require a lot of willpower, diligence and motivation from your end.

From an effectiveness standpoint, the results could be outstanding. But it depends on how long you’re able to sustain the changes. If you know exactly what changes to make, have a reason strong enough to keep going and have someone to keep a tab on you, your chances of long-term success are good. But if you don’t have these things in place, it’s a matter of time before you break. While there are hundreds who have cured themselves with this approach, thousands have failed. Let’s learn from both camps.

Approach 3 – A combination of medicines and lifestyle changes

The point of any medicine is to help cure or better a condition. Too little won’t work and too much will hurt. An optimal dose of the right medicine will certainly help. But it won’t fix everything.

On the other hand, the human body also has some healing powers. Like how it heals external injuries, it also tries to heal internal injuries and dysfunctions. All we need to do is to provide the body with an environment for healing. In other words, if you keep picking at that wound on your skin, it will never heal. But if you keep it safe, clean and away from any further damage it will heal quickly. Similarly, if you can make most of the lifestyle changes that help with the condition, you are providing the body with the right environment for healing. But this won’t fix everything, either.
