BirkenShock! After 242 Years, Birkenstock Premieres at Paris Fashion Week

1/6 Photo: Courtesy of Birkenstock The German health shoe brand Birkenstock is a bit like kale. It’s neither glamorous, nor exotic–no asparagus, no quinoa–yet it makes people feel good, almost virtuous. Because they know it is good for them. Last night in Paris this unbelievably venerable German footwear brand (it was founded in 1774) did something rather unexpected: It held what must have been a hugely expensive showcase and party in the temporary showspace of the Tuileries Gardens. Paris Hilton is back. Because fashion just can’t help itself.

NEW YORK — Paris Hilton is back. You remember Paris, right? The hotel heiress with the platinum hair who was the boldface party girl of the early ’00s. She was the original rich kid with a reality show; the savvy scion making cash off her name just by showing up at parties. The skinny girl with a sex tape and a pocket pooch who always posed for the paparazzi with her head cocked confidently to the side and with a knowing smirk looking like she’d invented this drug called being-famous-for-nothing…

When naming the great fashion capitals of the world Sackville, New Brunswick doesn’t come to mind. But seamstress Jeska Grue is doing her part to at least get it on the map. Grue’s one-woman shop operates on a small scale, and that’s by design. “I’m doing it this way because the way I produce things, a lot of care is put into it the sewing techniques that I use, the fabrics that I use [and] it’s a more durable piece of clothing…

Paris fashion week: six trends to know

Yacht club Fashion is often subject to a high seas takeover – and with fashion Instagram this summer an advert for yachting holidays, it’s no wonder that Paris SS17 had a nautical moment. There was a kind of sun-bleached, been-out-on-the-deck vibe to collections including Chloé and Loewe. The former added bowline knots to knitted dresses, and reworked naval bibs to suitable-for-work shirts. The latter – with JW Anderson involved – had more of a shipwrecked vibe, complete with patchwork, muslin, jute and luggage suitable for long journeys. Models walked to…
